Nota general
- The section includes the basement, ground and first-floor levels, showing the west wall and last flight of the staircase linking the entrance hall of Burlington House to the vestibule of the Royal Academy’s main exhibition galleries. This was designed in 1866-76 by Sydney Smirke R.A. (1798-1877) to create a ceremonial entry way to the new galleries and integrate them with the existing circulation routes of Burlington House. This model was likely created in response to the new requirements for access provisions to the reception area of the new Sackler Galleries, located directly above this space. Accounts of the project make clear that the difficulties of accommodating such provisions into the existing historic structure were identified at an early stage. These were designed to augment and improve the circulation around Smirke’s staircase. A new staircase was introduced to the west and a lift shaft to the east. The model also shows a proposal to open the existing ceiling and replace it with glazed floor panels.
